TU and RWTH: Application as Center for National High Performance Computing

In the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz – GWK), the Federal Government and the Länder agreed to promote a coordinated network of several National High Performance Computing (Nationales Hochleistungsrechnen – NHR) computing centres, which will provide resources and services for high-performance computing for all German universities.

RWTH Aachen University, together with TU Darmstadt, is applying here with an “NHR4CES” concept, which is especially designed to support Computational Engineering Sciences (CES). These applications are supported and funded by the states of Hessen and Nordrhein-Westfalen.

The IT Center of the RWTH and the University Computing Centre of the TU Darmstadt have been operating high-performance computers of supra-regional importance – so-called Tier 2 computers – for years. These systems have been open to academic researchers from all over Germany since 2017. Thus, both locations not only have the necessary infrastructure to operate future NHR systems securely and economically, but also the corresponding experience. TU Darmstadt and RWTH Aachen University are already working together in NFDI4Ing on the topic of research data management for engineers.
