Two-factor authentication (2FA) for the virtual desktop (vDesk)

Access to vDesk will only be possible with an additional security code in future

2026/02/05

At the end of 2025, two-factor authentication (2FA) was made mandatory at TU Darmstadt. In this context, from 9 March 2026, the virtual desktop environment (vDesk) will also be converted to mandatory two-factor authentication for logins – i.e. with a password and an additional security code (e.g. via smartphone).

On 9 March 2026, the entire vDesk environment will be converted to mandatory two-factor authentication as part of the introduction of 2FA. From this date onwards, access to vDesk.tu-darmstadt.de outside the TU network will only be possible with two-factor authentication, similar to VPN login.
The TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) and HOTP (HMAC-based One-Time Password) token methods are supported.

In addition to the password manager, the University Computing Centre (HRZ) recommends setting up a software token with an authenticator app on your mobile phone. Employees with managed computers can alternatively purchase a hardware token via the usual hardware ordering process if no mobile phone is available.

To ensure a smooth transition, all TU members who have not yet set up two-factor authentication are advised to activate the required token at an early stage.
