Mandatory use of two-factor authentication (2FA)

Restrictions if not activated by March 2026

2026/02/27

Anyone who has not yet activated two-factor authentication for their TU ID will face restrictions on access to central services from March 2026.

Since the end of last year, the activation of two-factor authentication (2FA) has been mandatory for all members of TU Darmstadt. For TU IDs for which 2FA has not yet been set up, binding regulations are now coming into force.

This measure serves to protect personal accounts and the university's digital infrastructure from cyber attacks and unauthorised access.

What does this mean in concrete terms?

The following regulations apply to persons who have not yet activated 2FA:

From March 2026: No access to central services without 2FA

Logging in to central services will only be possible with 2FA activated. Without activated 2FA, access to these services will be temporarily unavailable.

Activation can be done at any time. Once successfully set up, all central services will be immediately available again. Instructions for setup can be found on the HRZ website.

From July 2026: Blocking of TU IDs without activated 2FA

From July onwards, all accounts without activated 2FA will be blocked. This means that access to the central services associated with the account will no longer be possible. This also means that it will no longer be possible to activate 2FA independently at a later date.

Unblocking can only be done via the HRZ Service.
Please note that reactivation may take several days. During this time, the affected services will not be available to you.
