Important change to VPN Access
2026/03/27
Mandatory two-factor authentication (2FA) will be activated on the central VPN gateway. From 15.04.2026, access to the VPN service will only be possible using a second factor.
On 15.04.2026 at 08:00 a.m., two-factor authentication (2FA) will become mandatory for central VPN access at TU Darmstadt. From that point onwards, each login will require not only the TU ID and password but also a second factor.
This change affects all members of TU Darmstadt who use the VPN service, including staff in the central administration.
The new VPN profiles have been available since October 2025 (see HRZ News dated 22.10.2025). When using these profiles, the second factor is already requested.
What do I need to do?
- Already set up 2FA? If not already done, please use the remaining time before the changeover to test your VPN access with 2FA.
- Not yet activated 2FA? Set up 2FA now (see instructions) and then test your VPN access with the second factor enabled.
What happens on the deadline if 2FA has not been activated?
After the changeover, logging into the VPN service will only be possible with a second authentication factor. Users who have not set up 2FA by that time will no longer be able to log into the VPN and will therefore not be able to access internal services and systems that are only available via VPN.
