There are currently two instances available for using GitLab, both of which are operated by RWTH Aachen University. Following a decision by the RWTH Aachen University IT Centre, the “Ultimate for Education” instance (git.rwth-aachen.de) will be discontinued on 1 July 2027. The shutdown date for the “Community Edition” git-ce.rwth-aachen.de will be determined at a later stage. We will inform you in good time as soon as concrete plans are in place.

The background to this is new state-wide services in North Rhine-Westphalia and the need to avoid parallel structures.

This has corresponding implications for the use of this instance at TU Darmstadt.

HRZ is working in an alternative

The University Computing Centre (Hochschulrechenzentrum – HRZ) is already working on a suitable solution to enable an orderly migration of existing projects. The aim is to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

What does this currently mean for the use of GitLab

The shutdown will take place in stages. During this transition phase, you will continue to have access to your existing projects. However, from September 2026, it will no longer be possible to create new projects or accounts.

The schedule at a glance:

4. January 2027: Start of the phased shutdown

• It will no longer be possible to create new projects or new users.
• Editing within existing projects will still be possible.

1. June 2027: End of the migration phase/start of the read-only phase

• Projects will only be accessible in read-only mode.

1. July 2027: Final phased shutdown git.rwth-aachen.de

Please note that you are responsible for migrating your projects yourself.
