Information page on the disruption of the HPC cluster (as a result of fire damage in March 2025)

In March 2025, a smoldering fire broke out in the electrical system, resulting in the failure of the Lichtenberg II high-performance computer. Since then, we have been working continuously to restore the cluster to operational readiness. We will keep you up to date on the current status and the schedule for 2026 until full restoration is complete on the information page set up specifically for this purpose.

Hardware and Configurations

The cluster consists of three sections. The whole system is located on campus Lichtwiese in Darmstadt and consists of two stages (the later phase with one extension).

Various compilers, (scientific) libraries and other (application) software are available on the Lichtenberg cluster. Separate settings etc. are necessary for each of these packages.

Film: Inauguration of Lichtenberg II high-performance computer

In 2023, Lichtenberg II high-performance computer of TU Darmstadt was officially put into operation. Equipped with the latest technology, it sets standards in performance and energy efficiency and thus offers the best conditions for excellent research.
