Department: Applications

The Applications department operates the central software solutions of TU Darmstadt and provides the following systems, among others: Moodle for digital teaching and e-exams, applications in the context of research data management, applications for collaboration, special specialised applications, identity management and the web content management system FirstSpirit.

The Collaboration Applications group is responsible for the operation and introduction of central applications that support collaboration and make it more efficient. These include an application for file synchronisation in cooperation with the University of Giessen, the operation of SharePoint for the HRZ and central administration as well as various ticketing solutions for task management. Another focus of the group is the operation and support of applications in the context of research data management, such as eLabFTW, ShareLatex and Gitlab (in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University).

The Collaboration Applications group is also involved in several projects, such as Ticket4TU. Once the projects have been completed, the applications are put into operation and further developed by the group.

The group operates the learning management system Moodle (virtual course room for exchange and collaboration) and the web platform OpenLearnWare (freely accessible provision of teaching materials). The WCMS team supports the institutions, departments and administration of TU Darmstadt in the creation of websites with the Web Content Management System (WCMS) FirstSpirit. Templates, user-specific databases and interfaces are developed in line with the corporate design. The team also provides training and support for editors in the technical implementation and use of FirstSpirit. read more

In addition, the Content Management and Development group – together with the User Management and Development group – is responsible for the design and development of customised software solutions.

The User Management and Development group is responsible for the central identity access management system at TU Darmstadt, including the directory service and authentication. The group is responsible for central role management at TU Darmstadt and assigns a digital identity to a person, which is then maintained, updated and monitored throughout the entire access lifecycle of a user. The group also provides a portal for role management and user data maintenance.

The group is also responsible for the Athene card. This multifunctional personalised chip card is issued to all students and employees of TU Darmstadt and offers various functions such as an ID card function, printing in the PC pool, participation in car sharing, payment function in the canteen and much more.

In addition, the User Management and Development group – together with the Content Management and Development group – is responsible for the design and development of customised software solutions.
