Access and User Regulations

Usage for Scientific Research

For accessing and using the Lichtenberg cluster as a scientist and for scientific research, the following prerequisites are necessary:

1. Project

A project must be set up, to which the computing time used can be billed (booked) on. Please submit a Project Application for this purpose.

Usually the project application is submitted by the project manager (aka Person of Contact). NHR-N and NHR-L projects are scrutinized scientifically (according to the conditions of the NHR4CES Resource Allocation Board (RAB )).

Small projects will just be checked technically for feasibility.

2. User Account

A user account must be set up (based on TU-ID), activated and assigned to a project.

The “person to contact” controls who is assigned to the project .

The user account is assigned to exactly one person and is managed exclusively by TU-ID. For this purpose, an application for using the high-performance computer must be submitted: Application form .

Your user account (2) can be extended even without valid/running project, for you to have access to your research data even after end of a project (eg. to transfer and back up data from the file systems of the HPC to your own storage).

Do not share your user account (neither password nor ssh keys)! Collaboration is permitted only by being members in a common project.

Expiration

As projects can have several users/members, and a given user can be member of several projects, the validity terms of HPC user accounts and HPC projects are completely independent of each other. Both can expire (run out) at different dates, and extending one does not imply extending the other.

Data Sharing

For projects having several TU-IDs assigned, a shared project directory in /work/projects can be set up, initially having 5 TByte of quota.

As this is not done by default at activation of approved projects, please , mentioning the project ID in the subject of your mail.

Recommendation

For a smooth and efficient start in working with HPC resources, we recommend attending our monthly "Introduction to the Lichtenberg High Performance Computer ".
