Setting up the e-mail inbox at TU Darmstadt

Beside the general settings, here you will find detailed instructions for setting up your Linux mailbox in frequently used e-mail programs.

Student mailboxes

Use the following parameters to manually configure your email client. Integration is carried out via the IMAP protocol to ensure cross-device synchronisation of your emails.

Important note on authentication

A smooth connection can only be established if authentication is configured correctly:
  • TU ID as user name: Only use your <TU ID> to log in. Using your mail address as your user name will result in an authentication error.
  • Identical data for outgoing mail: Ensure that explicit login with your <TU-ID> and password is also stored for the outgoing mail server (SMTP).
  • Authentication method: If prompted, select the ‘Password, normal’ method.

To ensure that your e-mailing runs as smoothly as possible under IMAP, you should make specific adjustments to the basis configuration in your e-mail program.

If the setup is unsuccessful, please check the following points:

  • Function test: Can you log in to the webmail portal with your TU ID? If not, please check your password.
  • Network: Are you on a network that allows ports 993 and 465?
  • Support: If problems persist, please contact HRZ Service.

Important: To setup the central @tu-darmstadt.de e-mail address, which all employees receive when they activate their TU-ID, please follow the instruction Mailbox setup in Outlook.

Please use a locally installed e-mail programme to send and receive e-mails via your TU address. Never store your access data (TU-ID and password) with other providers (e.g. google or gmx) in order to access your TU mailbox via them. Passing on your access data to the provider violates the IT Security Guideline of TU Darmstadt.
