Jabber
Making collaboration easy

Jabber is a UC client (Unified Communications Client), which combines all relevant communication services in a central user interface.

UC Client (Jabber)

The Jabber client offers telephony, video call, chat function, screen sharing and data exchange. Via jabber you can quickly find and dial the numbers of all TU Darmstadt employees. Furthermore, Jabber offers you an encrypted chat function between individual users and in group chat rooms.

TU staff members with a personal telephone number can also use the Jabber client for the telephony service. Details on this are described below on this page according to the terminal devices used.

  • The Jabber Client can also be used outside of the TU network.
  • Moreover the Jabber can be used for your iPhone and Android smartphone.
  • You can synchronize your availability status with your appointments in Outlook, i.e. as soon as you are in an appointment that is set in Outlook, you will automatically be marked as absent / busy in the Jabber client.
  • Temporary group chats are possible for all users. To set up a persistent (permanent) chat room, please contact the HRZ service.

If you own a Cisco phone, you can also use the Jabber Client as a “softphone” instead of your office phone. The installation is possible on a PC/laptop as well as on smartphones.

Through the HRZ's personal Cisco UC Portal you can activate/enable the client for the voice service (telephony) as well as download the software.

Note: If you do not have a personal phone number (e.g. conference phone/group phone…) you can only access the chat function of the Jabber via your TU-ID.

The Jabber service also supports video telephony and the exchange of files.

If you own an Alcatel telephone, you can already use the chat function of the Jabber client as an additional online communication tool via your TU-ID without any further configuration changes in the telephone system.

As we currently still have free resources in the area of the UC system, we can also register TU employees as client-based users of the Cisco system if desired.

After this change, Alcatel users can also use the audio and video transfer as well as the telephone conference functions via Jabber client on the computer/laptop at the mobile workstation or smartphone – at least for the duration of the corona crisis. (The Alcatel office phone continues to work when no client is active.)
